London Prepares to Welcome Ontario's 55+ Athletes

actifest_2008.gifLondon, Ont. The Ontario Senior Games-Actifest 2008 are set for August 12-14 in London, Ontario. Some 1,500 seniors and their families are expected to come to the Forest City in mid-August for a series of competitive events that run the gamut from slo-pitch, bowling and horseshoes to darts, tennis and swimming. “These games support the government’s commitment to increasing sports participation and physical activity among Ontarians of all ages,” said Health Promotion Minister Jim Watson in the fall of 2007 when announcing London as the host city. “By participating in this event, Ontario’s seniors inspire us all to pursue the benefits of an active, healthy life style.”

The main centre of activity for the London Actifest is the University of Western Ontario where the Athletes Village, opening ceremonies and nine of the 16 competitions will be held. “The university is a perfect venue for this event,” says Deanna Bond, the games manager for Actifest 2008. “The athletes and guests will be housed in the London Hall, Perth Hall and Essex Hall residences, just a few minutes away from many of the competition sites.” The university location will also provide the participants and their families with some 4,000 parking spaces, cafeterias, in-room computer connectivity and access to the world-famous Fowler-Kennedy Sports Injury Clinic.

“We are very excited to have London host this event,” says Bond, who has also worked as a staff member with the 2001 Canada Summer Games, the 2004 Ontario Winter & Summer Games and the 2005 World Transplant Games. “The Ontario Senior Games provide a terrific opportunity for London to shine as a host city, and for the participants to challenge themselves physically and mentally while they renew old friendships and form new acquaintances.”

The games will run from August 12 to 14, with venues in several locations throughout the city in addition to the University. Some 400 volunteers are expected to help the games run smoothly and provide the participants with a wonderful experience. A grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation will also help Actifest 2008 upgrade some venues and provide the equipment necessary to run quality games.
