2008 Bob Secord Award Recipients Announced |

Doris Henhawk
2008 marks Doris Henhawk’s second year as President for the Brant-Haldimand-Norfolk District
25 Senior Games. She has been a member of the Seniors Games Committee since 1997. In
addition to convening a number of events, including 18 hole golf, euchre, and cribbage, Doris
actively participates on sub-committees such as fund-raising, helps to plan games events, and
encourages new events.
Doris leads a healthy, active lifestyle. She participates in District Games, Winterfest, and
Actifest. She has an optimistic personality and challenges others to overcome obstacles and to
work together. She is a pleasure to work with. Doris always brings out the best in people and is
adept at providing constructive criticism and positive feedback. She fosters an atmosphere of
open communication. In addition to excellent speaking skills, she manages her time efficiently
and provides strong leadership.
Doris promotes equal representation on the committee from all three districts. She rotates
monthly meetings throughout Brant, Haldimand, and Norfolk with the purpose of increasing
awareness of the Games. She is open to new ideas and is always looking for ways to improve
our District.
Doris is extensively involved in her community. She has lived all her life at Six Nations. She
attended Waterford District High School and graduated with Honours Grade 13. Next came
London Teachers’ College and a 25-year career as a teacher. She was Secretary for Six Nations
Teachers’ Association for three years and Treasurer for St. Peter’s Church, Ohsweken, for five
years.
Doris coached Girls’ Fastball for 30 years. She was part of the founding committee for Six
Nations Minor Softball for girls and boys 1973. She won two Canada Games Gold Medals as an
assistant coach for Team Ontario Girls’ Softball 1985 in St. John N.B. and 1989 in Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan (where she first met Bob Secord!) As a player, Doris won three Provincial
Championships in 1957,1960, and 1961 with Ohsweken Mohawks. She joined Provincial
Womens’ Softball Association (PWSA) and was a convenor for qualifier and provincial
championships. She also served as an Evaluator and Scout for National and Provincial Ladies’
Softball for eight years.
Doris is a very worthy recipient of the Bob Secord Award.
Jerry Shea
Jerry Shea has been a staunch support of Ontario Senior Games at both
the District and Provincial level since 1993, the year he retired.
He has been and continues to be very active in his District of Hamilton
by holding positions at the Committee level. As a participant, he has
represented his District at several Actifest by playing cards and
taking part in 5 pin bowling.
Jerry became active at the Provincial level as a Council member, the as Vice-President and then as President.
He has shown a passion for guiding the OSGA to reaching its full potential.
Even though he is presently faces some personal challenges, he
continues to give of himself to the OSGA at both the District and
Provincial levels.
Jerry is a very worthy recipient of the Bob Secord Award.
